John's Five Fan Fiction Links

Behind The Walls Of Winter
Canon: A Song of Ice And Fire
Words: 3,113
Summery and Critique:
This is a short story based on George R. R. Martins series of novels. This short story is a prequel of sorts. Taking place before the first book, it shows what might have been an average day for the Stark family before they are seperated. To me it seemed like a very plausable situation and the writter has a good grasp on the characters personalities and relasionships with each other. Overall this is a nice contrast to depressing dark nature of books.

One Of Many
Canon: Planescape: Torment
Words: 974
Summery and Critique:
Planescape: Torment is a role playing game from the late 90's. This piece of fan fiction is another story that takes place before the major events of the game/book. The author has created his on incarnation of the "Nameless One" who we can see dying and reviving without his memories. There really is not to much to this story besides a lengthy description of a sun-shower. It is a shame that there is so little fan-fiction based on this fiction which seems to really lend itself to it.

The Nature of Damnation
Canon: Planescape: Torment
Words: 839
Summery and Critique:
Yet another piece of Planescape fan-fiction, this particular short story dates back all the way to 2002, 10 years ago. It takes place after the main events of the game and expands upon what many theorize to be what happens to the main character after the credits roll. The writer here paints a picture of The Nameless One who is cursed to fight in an everlasting war were he cannot die. He does a good job of describing the horror and hopelessness of his situation.

Forgotten
Canon: The Lord Of The Rings
Words: 160
Summery and Critique:
Lord Of The Rings is a very popular subject for fan-fiction writers. This particular story is based off a scene from the first movie "The Fellowship Of The Ring". The writer was struck by a scene where a nameless character is killed off. The story is very short and to the point, it describes this lonely man who will never be rememebered. A good short depressing read.

Escape From Black Mesa
Canon: Half-Life
Words: 10033
Summery and Critique:
This fan-fiction is set parralel to the events that play out in the original Half Life computer
game. The writer here has attempted to fill in some of the blanks of the story by introducing
his own set of characters and having them attempt to escape the black mesa facility after a
scientific expiriment has gone wrong. I had some issues with the way this story was
structured and writted, right off that bat there seemed to be some silly mistakes which
indicate that the auther did not bother to double check things, or that this is some draft.
An entertaining enough read, but lacks the atnosphere and mystery of the source material.
